Chevron Headquarters

Dear Chevron Management,
I wish to apply for an engineering job at your San Ramon headquarters. I believe that my qualifications and prior work experience make me an excellent candidate for the job. I maintained a 4.0 GPA through all 4 years of college while working a part time job and being involved in intramural activities as well. As well as good grades, I was part of the CSU marching band where I worked hard to be the drum captain.
I have continued my academic success maintaining my 4.0 GPA while being the drum captain and working a part time job at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Working there has made me work on my leadership and communication skills, and being section leader has polished my leadership skills as well. I know that working for Chevron will let me use all of my abilities and will only help me to excel even more than I already have.
In addition to working at Chevron, I will still help out at CSU as much as I possibly can. I will help teach drill, help with the kids learning music, and help the drum majors perfect their abilities and skills. I love music and I hope to be around it as long as I can.
After graduation I hope to become a mechanical engineer. I am commited to this goal as it is evident of my hard work to keep my GPA up. I am convinced that this proof of my hard work and dedication makes me a great candidate for the job. I can be reached at 970-302-7493 and derekjordan@msn.com. Thank you for your consideration and time.
Sincerely,
Derek Lewis

3rd Scholarship Essay
There are many differentiating factors that make me stand out from my fellow classmates and peers. One of those skills is playing the drums. I am the drum captain at my high school. Being the drum captain requires dedication, heart and passion, and ultimately, leadership. Without these skills, I would not be as successful as I have been in band. That success carries over into my school work and sports as well. Those skills affect my life not only in the classroom, but outside of school as well.

Mr. Judson Doyle
Science Teacher
Roosevelt High School
Johnstown, CO 80534
Dear Mr. Doyle,
As you already know, college is my option of choice after school. I am planning on playing baseball in college so my college of choice is still unsure of. I would greatly appreciate if you would write a letter of recommendation for me. Because I have taken almost every science class with you, you know the quality of my work, my work ethics, and my passion for things I love doing. You also know the kind of person I am.
As my science teacher, you know how hard I work and the effort I put into my school work; but not only school work but my extra-curicular activities as well. You have always been there for me and were willing to help so you also know that I care about my work.
If you could give me or even Mrs. Boresen my letter within the next 2 to 3 weeks that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to write this letter for me. Let me know if you need any more information.
Sincerely,
Derek Lewis

Mr. Alan Gibson
Head Baseball Coach
Roosevelt High School
Johnstown, CO 80534
Dear Mr. Gibson,
As you already know, college is my option of choice after school. I am planning on playing baseball in college so my college of choice is still unsure of. I would greatly appreciate if you would write a letter of recommendation for me. Because you have been my coach for many years, you know my dedication and passion for the things that I am involved with.
As my baseball coach, you have seen me grow because of the hard work and effort I put into sports. You also know that I can handle failure; since baseball is a game of failures. You know that I can handle adversity and deal with not succeeding on my first try.
If you could give me or even Mrs. Boresen my letter within the next 2 to 3 weeks that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to write this letter for me. Let me know if you need any more information.

Tell us about your academic/career short-term and long-term goals.
How has your Hispanic heritage influenced these goals?
How has your Hispanic heritage influenced these goals?
My academic career has always included a love for math and science. After my freshman year is when I determined that I had a natural ability for these subject areas and I started researching careers in which I could use them. I enjoy building things and figuring out how to solve problems so my interest in mechanical engineering greatly increased. My short-term goals include graduating from high school and maintaining my 3.2 grade point average. My step-father is a computer field engineer and he has greatly influenced my career goals. He is also Hispanic and is one of the reasons that I want to major in mechanical engineering. He has inspired me to do my best and has been instrumental in my determination to attend college.
My Hispanic heritage has influenced these goals because as the enrollment of Hispanics in schools increase, our graduation rates from high school are not that impressive. I want to be a positive role model for my Hispanic peers and be an encouragement to them. When society tells me that I cannot do something because the odds are against it is when I am the most determined. Being an Hispanic male and wanting to attend and graduate from college hopefully will prove to other Hispanic males that they can achieve their goals if they keep trying.

For the past four years I have been involved in our high school marching band as a percussionist. This year I was selected to be the section leader. I have been a member of the RHS golf team and have been a varsity letterman for the last two seasons and was one of our co-captains as well. My favorite sport is baseball and I have been participating in this since I was five years old. School organizations that I am a member of include FCCLA and GEEK club, which is a club for math and science students in which we play and develop games to increase these skills. From participating in these activities I have learned the importance of playing as a team and also how vital encouraging one another is. Being chosen as a leader also has taught me how necessary it is to evaluate situations before ever reacting to them. I feel that I have grown as an individual by being a participant and member of these activities. I have also had two jobs which have taught me the importance of being on time and doing my best while on the job. Employers count on their employees to be present at work and when my colleague did not show up for work, I understood how big of a toll it puts on everyone. I feel that all of this has prepared me to be successful in college and also how to communicate and interact with others.

I really haven’t experienced many academic challenges, but this year in my debate class, I was challenged by my teacher. I have never worked so hard in any class and what made it so difficult for me was that I had to debate my classmates. I learned that you can disagree with someone but not have to dislike them. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and I developed a genuine respect for this. I also learned how vitally important preparation is for performing at my teacher’s high standards. I practiced at home and did thorough research in order to feel prepared and be confident in my presentation so that I did not appear offensive or aggressive toward my peers.
